Excuses that May Damage your Professional Reputation

  1. I have no time

Here the key in this case is to know how to say ‘no’: “You have to try to be very selective and, above all, do not hide in it to give up opportunities that we let pass because we are absorbed in our habitual activity.”, Different Experts says that putting this excuse, without knowing what it is, “is working on short-termism. And if you really cannot at that time, answering a question seeking a postponement is the best option. “

  1. I am in Meeting

Depending on the position you occupy, being together is an excuse more than enough not to address any issue. But if someone wants to talk to you, and more than three consecutive times receive the same answer, you will clearly question your efficiency as a manager. Effective meetings do not last longer than 20 minutes. Jericho recommends holding them standing and with an agenda: “Set a prior objective and reach a conclusion”. This strategy will allow agile management and save time for other tasks.

  1. I have a Full Schedule

If you have a position of responsibility or certain popularity in a particular sector, you will soon begin to see how the few holes you have (food, gym) will be filled with labor issues.

No matter how little you neglect, you will be surprised to tell your mother or your friend from school that you cannot eat that day because “I have a full agenda.”

You will have fallen for nothing in what experts calls ‘unconscious self-centeredness’: “Whoever puts him or her in the service of others, whether from a professional or personal perspective must be able to try to find space for others.”

Experts says that “some professionals use this and other excuses to brag about a workload that is not always true.” So, if you want to keep your friends and network contacts try to make a gap, even in the medium term.

  1. Now it cannot be

It’s not an agenda up, or not have time, you just cannot find the time. If you see more than three times in a day, ‘now it cannot be’, it is a symptom that perhaps it will never be possible.

Experts also say that being aware of it is a good principle: “We cannot intervene in what we are not able to detect.” It proposes to place in a visible place a prohibited signal that activates the alert before this excuse that, explains, “can be mitigated marking a term, for example,” now it cannot be but go in 30 minutes or better call me tomorrow at this time ” .

In this way you will mark a specific goal that will help you manage what you are doing and set limits for you to address a matter that, in most cases, can help you to be more effective or give you clues to solve something otherwise.

  1. Send me an Email

How long does it take to read an email and in answering? Whether you are one of the times to answer e-mails or respond on the go, those who know you know that “send me an email” is not an excuse, it is a management accelerator.

But if you use it to get rid of problems and never answer, not only hurt your image, but you are in the worst of evidence: your trail in the network. He or those who require you can show, like the worst of sins that they have tried to contact you without a response.

Working is not only a matter of producing, it also means managing your times and, above all, being able to attend sooner than later the unforeseen changes that changes the pace of your journey.
