Henry Mintzberg Management 

Managers perform a range of roles as a part of their duty. A spectacular management researcher, Dr. Henry Mintzberg states. In fact that the duty of managers can be best defined by looking over their roles at work. There is a great difference between a role and a management role. Therefore the term management roles point toward particular categories of managerial behavior which is limited to management. So Henry Mintzberg’s management states that the duty of managers can be best defined by looking over the management roles at work.

Managerial Roles in Organization – Henry Mintzberg Management

Every organization gives several roles to various employees among the management as one of their job responsibilities. Therefore managerial roles are also one of them and have the utmost importance. However, before heading towards the management roles. As it is important to understand what a role really is and how it is associated with a specific position. Moreover, a role is a well-mannered set of behaviors connected with a particular position or office.

Structured Observation Henry Mintzberg Management

This research was based on the daily activities of five executives from different types of organizations.

  • Consulting firm
  • School
  • Technology firm
  • Hospital
  • Consumer goods manufacturer

On this basis, different roles of managers were identified. Moreover, those were categorized in three main roles:

  • Interpersonal Roles
  • Informational Roles
  • Decisional Roles

According to Mintzberg’s research on management roles, there are ten key managerial roles. Such as

  1. Leader
  2. Figurehead
  3. Liaison
  4. Monitor
  5. Disseminator
  6. Spokesperson
  7. Entrepreneur
  8. Disturbance Balancer
  9. Resource Allocator
  10. Negotiator

All come under the above three types of roles. So each type of management role along with key roles that are associated with certain types of roles is defined as follows.

Interpersonal Roles

Interpersonal roles are roles that involve persons and subordinates out of the organization and other ceremonial and symbolic nature duties. In addition, three key managerial roles, i.e. figurehead, leader, and liaison are included in interpersonal types of roles. Further, these key roles comprise different duties to be performed and are described below with brief details. Moreover, interpersonal roles flow directly from the manager’s position. This help in developing and managing effective relationships with fellow employees.

  • Figurehead

Symbolic legal and social duties are performed by the figurehead.

  • Leader

The role of the leader is to have effective communication with employees through a close attachment as well as motivate and coach them when it is required. Besides, staffing, training, and other relative duties are also accomplished by the leader.

  • Liaison

The liaison manages a self-developed group of contracts and informers outside of the organization in order to get useful information that is in favor of the organization.

Informational Roles

Informational Roles cover collecting, receiving, and spreading information. There are 3 key roles such as a monitor, disseminator, and spokesperson that come under the type of informational roles. While on the other hand, receiving and delivering information helps managers to be like the nerve center of an organizational unit/department.

  • Monitor

The monitor finds internal and external information about certain issues that are associated with the Business Organization and comprise direct or indirect effects.

  • Disseminator basic managerial roles and skills

The role of the disseminator is to transmit information internally, which is received from either internal or external sources. Disseminator delivers information that is obtained from outsiders or insiders to the high authority members of the organization.

  • Spokesperson

The spokesperson delivers information about the organization to the outsiders about policies, strategies, and actions. Moreover, the possible results associated with the organization.

Decisional Roles

Decisional Roles comprise making any choice or certain decisions, which have enough effect on the organization. Moreover, there are 4 key roles, i.e. entrepreneur, and resource allocator. As well as disturbance handler and negotiator. Basically, they are associated with decisional roles.

  • Entrepreneur

The entrepreneur performs the role of a designer, initiator, and encourager of improvement and innovation. Hence entrepreneur searches for change in the organizational environment and begins improvement projects.

  • Disturbance Handler

The disturbance handler takes certain effective actions in order to relieve the organization. Although when it is facing enormous unexpected problems

  • Resource Allocator

The Resource allocator plays a vital role in allocating all kinds of organizational resources and approving significant decisions. Since resources allocator allots all types of resources, i.e. equipment, funding, human resource, and time.

  • Negotiator

The negotiator is one of the important managerial roles. Hence represents an organization during major negotiations or talks. Actually, that has an effect on the manager’s responsibilities.

  • Entertain meetings
  • Represent the organization
  • Transmit information
  • Analyze information
  • Allocation of resources
  • Negotiate resources
  • Promote interests
  • Problem-solving
