Procrastination Definition

The procrastination , a barbarous word that comes from Latin “procrastinare” “pro” (forward) and “crastinus” (which concerns the next day) and designates this tendency to procrastinate . A procrastinator always has a good excuse not to do his job, not to advance on his goals and not finish his projects.

This bad habit would affect 20% of the population, in the professional field as in the privacy. It prevents you from completing your tasks, from succeeding what you undertake, and it can even lead you to lose confidence in yourself. Rest assured, this evil is quite curable and with a little bit of goodwill, everyone can overcome procrastination.

Why do you Need Procrastinate?

To get rid of procrastination, one must first identify the causes. Everyone has his reasons for procrastinating, and there are many. Generally, you tend to postpone something unpleasant or require effort, such as reframing an employee on his or her behavior or writing a report. One of the main causes of procrastination is fear:

  • The fear of failure;
  • Fear of the judgment of others or of oneself;
  • Fear of doing wrong;
  • The fear of the unknown that prevents you from going forward because you do not know what awaits you.
  • Fear of success because if you succeed, you will definitely solicit more and you will then have more work.

The other reasons that can push you to procrastination are:

  • Anxiety
  • Poor self-esteem: you do not feel able to perform this action;
  • The lack of concentration: you let yourself be distracted easily;
  • The lack of motivation: you do not see the interest of carrying out this task,
  • The lack of perspective: you have no sense of priorities, you do not know where to start, or you do not feel the time necessary to carry out a task.

What are the Consequences?

Tirelessly putting everything back overnight, you find yourself staying late at night in the office to finish your tasks of the day. You do everything at the last minute and you live in a state of constant stress. Since you have less time to do your job, you are buckling it and you are not satisfied with the result. This is how you lose your self-esteem and doubt yourself.

In addition to having a negative impact on your work and your self-confidence, procrastination and the resulting stress can have an impact on your health.

It is time to act and overcome procrastination. Get out of this vicious circle now and take control of your projects with these 5 tricks to fight procrastination.

It’s Decided, you stop Procrastinating

As soon as you stop procrastinating, you will become more efficient in your work and you will be satisfied with what you have accomplished. Who has never heard this phrase: “Never postpone until tomorrow what you can do the same day. “? Put it into practice with these 5 tricks.

  1. The will to stop

You have realized that you are a procrastinator and you want to stop being one. Congratulations, you have taken an essential first step. As for the smoker who wants to stop, the will is the first step necessary to achieve it.

  1. Identify why you procrastinate

Now that you know the different causes of procrastination, determine the reason that prevents you from acting. By understanding why you procrastinate, you will be able to act and gradually get rid of this bad habit.

  1. Focus on simple goals

To simplify your task, break down your goals into smaller, easily feasible steps.

The hardest thing is to start because this is what requires the most energy. Once launched, you will advance without even realizing it.

That’s why you have to start with simple goals that you master.

  1. Avoid distractions

Consultation of emails, Facebook, Internet … Due to their lack of concentration, procrastinators tend to be easily distracted. Avoid checking your emails every 5 minutes, but limit yourself to only two to three times a day, at fixed times. If you can, cut the Internet to avoid being tempted and so stay focused on what you do.

  1. Make a list

List your tasks for the day or week. It is important to have only one list in progress and updated on a daily basis. Make sure it is not too long so as not to discourage you.

Avoid general tasks such as cleaning or playing sports, but be specific. For example, vacuuming in the kitchen or going to run 10 minutes, are more specific tasks. It is then easier to get started because you know what you have to do. Remember to schedule a time for each task.

The interest of making to do list is to be able to bar the tasks that have been realized as we go along. It is motivating to see that progress is being made in achieving its objectives.

In Conclusion

Stop thinking “I’ll do it tomorrow” “But think” now, I’m going! ” “. There is no need to try to avoid or bypass the obstacle because you will have to confront it at some point. To repel it only worsens the situation. In the end, how relieved and proud to have taken action, to have accomplished this task and reached your goal, in short, to say no to procrastination.

Finally, rest assured, if you happen, on rare occasions, to postpone a task because you are tired, it is not procrastination. We all need to take breaks, to wake up the mind, which helps to stimulate its creativity and therefore its productivity.
