Projects integrating Sustainable Methods: – Today, most companies attach great importance to sustainable development. It was therefore logical and necessary to integrate it into project management. This is the mission set by GPM Global (Green Project Management), an American company, in creating the PRiSM methodology.
PRiSM stands for Projects integrating Sustainable Methods (“projects integrating sustainable methods”). It is a project management method based on sustainable development. The aim is to enable companies to manage their projects while integrating environmental sustainability into their processes and thus reduce their negative ecological and social impact when carrying out projects. In short, with PRiSM, project management becomes eco-friendly!
Principles of Projects integrating Sustainable Methods
PRiSM provides a comprehensive methodology for integrating sustainable development into project management. By following this framework and using the tools and methods provided, organizations can achieve a perfect balance between limited resources, their social responsibility and sustainable results for their projects.
PRiSM is a structured, process-based methodology. It focuses on five areas of sustainable development (P5) and four key project phases (concerned groups, sustainability orientation, organizational orientation, results). When all these elements are properly assimilated and effectively addressed, they reduce the ecological impact of any type of project.
This approach has the same basis as the PMBOK guide and its framework is derived, inter alia, from the ISO 14001 standard. It integrates best practices to help you answer the question “How do I make my project greener?”
The PRiSM method is primarily designed for large-scale real estate development projects or construction or infrastructure projects that can have adverse environmental effects.
Finally, PRiSM is a stand-alone method that can be quickly implemented with the majority of project management methodologies such as PRINCE2 or Agile methods.
Process of Projects integrating Sustainable Methods
The PRiSM method is based on the P5 standard for sustainable development in project management. The 5Ps are People, Planet, Prosperity, Process and Products (People, Planet, Prosperity, Process and Products). This standard is effective in reducing the risk level of a project from an ecological, economic and societal point of view while extending the scope of the benefits obtained.
PRiSM extends beyond the traditional lifecycle of a project with a 5-step approach that integrates pre-project planning, adoption and integration of the service or product and realization of the benefits product or service.
P5 is the link between sustainable development and projects. This standard enables you to understand the impact of your projects and thus contribute positively to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
P5 allows you to connect an approach based on three fundamental principles (society, environment and economy or People, Planet and Prosperity) with the project processes and the services or products that result. The project manager must take into account the objectives of the project and understand their impact on society, the environment and the economy. This objective view allows it to provide qualitative and quantitative indicators to the various stakeholders.
Six Principles for Sustainable Change
To integrate sustainable development within their organization, companies must have an appropriate value system and face their responsibilities in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and the fight against corruption.
- Commitment and Responsibility
Recognize the right to a safe, clean and healthy environment, equal opportunities, fair remuneration, ethical supplies and respect for the rule of law.
- Ethics and Decision-making Power
Support organizational ethics and decision-making in accordance with universal principles through the identification, alleviation and prevention of short- and long-term harmful impacts on society and the environment.
- Integration and Transparency
Encourage interdependence between economic development, social integrity and environmental protection in all aspects of management, practice and monitoring.
- Development of Resources
Maintain and enhance our natural resources by improving the way we develop and use technologies and resources.
- Social and Ecological Equity
Evaluate human vulnerability in ecologically sensitive areas and population centers through demographic dynamics.
- Economic Prosperity
Establish budgetary strategies and targets that balance stakeholder needs by including immediate needs as well as those of future generations.
- Training
In order to implement the PRiSM method effectively and become an eco-friendly project manager, you must take training and obtain the required certification. This also ensures that the method is correctly administered and its values are respected.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Projects integrating Sustainable Methods
If your company really wants to invest in sustainable development, then PRiSM is an ideal solution. Once implemented, you can benefit from lower energy consumption, improved waste management and lower distribution costs.
On the other hand, this methodology can only work if each of the services of the company is fully involved and respects the approach.
Conclusion
PRiSM provides a framework for integrating sustainable development into project management. This approach applies to most project management methods (Agile, PRINCE2, etc …). In order for it to function properly, it is essential that the company, all of its departments and the project manager are all involved and rigorously follow its principles and values.
